Our new factory unit is due to be completed this winter, which means several new roles are available for the right applicants. Magnetic Shields Limited have an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic individual to join our on-site Research & Development team as Senior Electronics Engineer

We are leading specialists in the design, manufacture and installation of bespoke magnetically shielded rooms, and have an expanding customer base throughout the UK, Europe, USA and Asia. With a full manufacturing facility in Staplehurst, Kent and fully equipped with the latest technology, we are able to provide our customers with the highest level of service and quality. All of our manufacturing processes, including heat treatment, are integrated in our production plant.

About the role:

We are looking for an enthusiastic Senior Electronics Engineer to join our expanding Research & Development team. This position will involve working with Physicists and Engineers on the design, development, documentation and practical build of original equipment, as well as the practical build of repeating products to meet customer expectation within tight timescales. The equipment build will possess an electrical and electronic content together with supporting mechanical content. Defining, documenting and sourcing suitable parts is a key requirement. Basic workshop skills as well as an academic qualification is essential. A good appreciation of Health & Safety aspects within the daily operation of a busy laboratory/workshop environment is needed.

The team is responsible for the experimental setup realisation and measurement of magnetic fields across a range of frequencies from DC (0 Hz) to VLF (3-30 kHz), for both research and technical support purposes. The position will also involve the construction and operation of compensation coil systems for nullifying magnetic fields and systems for the degaussing of large enclosures. The candidate will be required to perform test set ups plus the operations both in-house and externally, whilst documenting procedures and results. The role will require communication with customers to provide technical support, which can additionally involve site visits, so will call for the flexibility and self-motivation required to work in a dynamic SME.

With Magnetic Shields Limited being a member of the UK Quantum Hub, the successful applicant will also have the opportunity to work on various Innovate UK-funded projects, which aim to place the United Kingdom at the forefront of emerging quantum technologies and their applications

Required Skills/Experience:

  • 2:1 degree minimum in electronic engineering
  • Practical & workshop experience with a range of electronic measurement and signal generation equipment
  • Basic fault finding and demonstration of logical method
  • Basic programming skills for equipment automation
  • Electronic component recognition and understanding operation
  • Soldering, crimping and calibration experience
  • Technical documentation skills with keen eye for detail
  • Strong analytical, alongside good computer skills & data presentation
  • Reliable, motivated with ability to demonstrate logical and reasoned approach to problem solving
  • Good communication skills, including liaising with other departments & customers, report & software data recording
  • Understanding of project driven process
  • Good appreciation of Health & Safety requirements


  • PCB design and designing for EMC
  • Excellent understanding for the generation and testing of DC & AC magnetic fields
  • An awareness of EMI shielding techniques and a familiarity with EMI testing standards, i.e.: MIL-STD or IEEE
  • Excellent understanding of computer aided design techniques
  • An ability to support off-site work with occasional overseas travel [valid passport is preferable]
